What can cause stomach pain?
Stomach pain can be felt as crampy or a dull ache in the abdomen, it can also be associated with constipation, bloating and the passing of wind. Colicky pain comes and goes with sharp, severe pain suddenly felt in the abdomen. Females can also get pain with their menstrual cycle. You can get stomach pain after eating or, it can be stress related which is called an abdominal migraine, or stomach migraine. Sometimes we can suffer with stomach bugs, food poisoning, a stomach bacterial infection, or food intolerances.
If you have persistent, regular stomach pain and you have had the problem for 6 months or longer you may have IBS which is chronic pain that can be felt anywhere in the stomach, but is often felt in the lower abdomen. It can be worse soon after eating and relieved or worsened with a bowel moment. IBS can often be unpredictable and can change over time.
A food intolerance is when you have difficulty digesting certain food. It is not considered serious by medics but symptoms like belly pain, bloating, heartburn or nausea and a generally upset tummy can make you feel really unwell and can impact day to day life.
Abdominal migraines are often caused by stress, anxiety, missing a meal or poor sleep. They can be common in children as well as adults. The stomach pain can feel moderate or severe and it can be accompanied by nausea.
Acid reflux is when you get a burning sensation in your throat or chest which can be described as heart burn. Chances are you usually experience acid reflux after eating and it can often be worse at night or when lying down. There can be regurgitation of food or the taste of a sour liquid in your mouth / throat. It can often be accompanied by bloating and burping and is often experienced when you are stressed.
What types of stomach pain can you get?
You can suffer with different types of abdominal pain; such as pain after eating, stomach bugs, digestive problems, stress related pain, inflammation of the gut and menstruation. If you get pain after you eat you may have gas or bloating, indigestion, constipation, diarrhoea or even food poisoning. Whatever type of belly pain you are suffering with there is homeopathic medicine that can help you.
What is the best natural remedy for stomach pain?
Try sipping warm water, especially if you are experiencing diarrhoea. Then make yourself some ginger or peppermint tea, these teas are particularly good to have before a meal. Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory and can help relieve a tummy ache. Peppermint is used for many digestive problems as it soothes the stomach. Chamomile tea can help too as it soothes cramping and is good for stomach pain after eating. Applying a hot water bottle or heat pad to your stomach can also help relax the area and feel soothing, relaxing the muscles.
The BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apple, apple sauce and toast) was often recommended for people experiencing abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhoea or vomiting to have for 24 – 48 hours as it is gentle on the digestion. Bananas and apples both contain pectin, a starch that can help ‘bind the stomach’. For some this diet can be helpful for a day or two, but others prefer to stick to bland food like broth, porridge, plain biscuits or apple juice to help alleviate their symptoms.
