Homeopathy & hypersensitivity
All humans are sensitive, whether it is physically, emotionally, mentally socially, or, hopefully all! However, some people have heightened sensitivity, and these people are called a ‘hypersensitive person’ (HSP) or can be referred to as Empath. About 20% of the population are highly sensitive. They tend to feel things deeper than the normal person, and can easily get overwhelmed, or affected by things like violence. They have higher rates of sensitivity to their surroundings, are perceptive and observant, including to others’ emotions, and often need time alone. HSP can be sensitive to physical things too, like noise levels or strong smells.
HSP in adults
Some signs of having hypersensitivity as an adult are:
- Struggling to take criticism, and taking everything to heart
- Having tendencies to be easily overwhelmed
- Heightened or sensitive senses (hearing, smell, touch etc.
- Observant, noticing subtle changes
- Empathetic and easily understand/feel others emotions
- Need alone time
- Have a very vivid imagination – daydream often
- Dislike violence – avoid movies/TV shows that are violent
- Are deeply affected by music and art
Hypersensitivity is not a mental disorder, it’s a distinct personality trait. (Source used: health.com)
Self care & diet for HSP
To be a HSP is an amazing trait: it makes you emotionally sensitive, deeply empathetic, and understanding of peoples’ experiences and situations. However, it can also lead you to constantly help others, even at the detriment of yourself, and become overwhelmed with the amount of emotional and sensory you absorb and process every day. It can be exhausting.
So, to keep yourself revived, make sure you:
- Get around 8 hours of sleep
- Eat healthy
- Drink lots of water
- Avoid/spend limited time with emotionally draining people
- Be mindful of both internal and external stimulus
- Have daily downtime – with less screen time eg. read a book, meditate etc.
- Wear headphones or earplugs if needed, in crowded environments etc.
- Use affirmations! (Scroll down for some examples)
- Embrace and action your creativity!
- Spend time outdoors.
- Use grounding techniques- bare feet in grass, taking a hot bath, deeply breathing.
- Ask for help when needed

Diet:
Make sure you eat healthy! – Have lots of fibre (fruit and vegetables) as well as protein, dairy and carbohydrates. But avoid processed and fast food, and also sugar.
Instead, try some of these foods to reduce anxiety and support your nervous system:
- Nuts and seeds: contains healthy elements that improve your mood and reduce anxiety
- Fatty fish (tuna, salmon, sardines mackerel etc.): contains omega-3, which decreases stress in your body. It also increases serotonin and dopamine
- Whole grains: contains lots of magnesium, and tryptophan – which becomes serotonin. Magnesium deficiency may result in anxiety
- Dark chocolate: contains flavanols, which benefit brain function
- Avocado: rich in vitamin B – develops healthy nerves and brain cells. A deficiency of vitamin B can cause feelings of anxiety
- Blueberries: contains antioxidants and vitamin C for anxiety relief
- Tea: green tea – contains L-theanine (amino acid that reduces anxiety); herbal tea (mint, chamomile, lavender etc.) – reduces anxiety significantly; and black tea – increases dopamine turnover in your brain due to theaflavins
- Ginger: contains more than 14 bio active compounds and antioxidants – which sharpen your cognitive functions and protect your brain. It also may reduce anxiety as effectively as benzodiazepines drugs.
- Turkey: contains tryptophan (essential amino acid that makes niacin). Niacin makes serotonin which increases your mood!
- Oranges & grapefruit: high amounts of vitamins C, which is a stress reducer that lowers your blood pressure.
