Can our homes make us happier?

Everyone wants to be happy, right? Sometimes we can feel like happiness is about wealth, or power or prestige. But I think it is the simple pleasures in life that can bring happiness and serenity.

Using your favourite mug, sitting in a comfortable chair, going for a peaceful walk, these are all things that can bring pleasure every day.

So don’t save things for best, use them everyday, because you’re worth it!

Simple tips to making your home cheerier that cost very little or nothing and can bring you daily joy are:

  • Plants – lots of them! They clean the air and their bright colours brighten up the dullest places so grow your own fresh air in your home!
  • Colour – colours are emotive, so don’t go all beige or grey on me, add splashes or bold areas of colour to your home to enliven you. Yellow and pink can make us feel happier, blues and greens calmer. Choose the colours that you are drawn to and enjoy them in your home. A cushion or vase can really perk things up.
  • Tidy – cluttered home, cluttered mind, right? If you have lots of clutter start with clearing a little every day, just 10 minutes and then leave it, it may take a bit of time and effort but it is a great way to shift the clutter. As a neat-freak my advice is tidy up as you go, it only takes a few minutes and becomes second nature. Don’t forget a place for everything and, everything in its place!
  • Scent – Fragrance is really important for creating a positive atmosphere in your home. Essential oils can calm, soothe or invigorate. Try some rose absolute in your bed room or, lavender in your sitting room or ylang ylang in the kitchen, to lift your mood everyday.
